For Proscovia Atyang, the idea behind Mirembe Pathways Initiative began in Uganda. Growing up, she saw how deeply a person's circumstances could shape their access to education and opportunity. She experienced some of those challenges herself the determination, uncertainty, and sacrifices that can come with pursuing an education when the path is not always clear or easy. Those experiences stayed with her. Over the years, her journey took her beyond the classroom and into different communities and international spaces through volunteering, leadership, and service. From Uganda to the United States, she continued to encounter young people navigating barriers to education, belonging, leadership, and opportunity. She began to see a common thread: **Talent is everywhere. Opportunity is not.** And increasingly, one question stayed with her: **What would become possible if more people had a pathway to opportunity?** That question became the seed of an idea. [Read More](#) Then came a shared vision. -------------------------- When Proscovia arrived at Brandeis University, she did not arrive with a completely new idea. She arrived carrying years of experiences, observations, and convictions that had already shaped how she understood education, service, and opportunity. At Brandeis, she met her classmate and friend Eric Osman, who shared a similar vision of creating meaningful pathways for people to learn, grow, lead, and build better futures. Their conversations revealed something powerful: This was not just an idea one person was carrying. It was a vision they could build together. Together, they founded Mirembe Pathways Initiative. Why Mirembe? ------------ Mirembe means peace in Luganda. But we believe peace is more than the absence of conflict. **Peace is having possibilities. Peace begins with opportunity. And opportunity begins with someone who believes in you.** For a girl whose education has been interrupted by poverty, displacement, crisis, or other barriers, peace can mean having the opportunity to return to school and continue her education. For a young person arriving in a new country, peace can mean finding mentorship, community, and someone to help them navigate an unfamiliar environment. For a woman building a small business in an underserved community, peace can mean having an opportunity to create stability and economic independence. We believe that education, mentorship, leadership, and economic opportunity are pathways to lasting peace. That belief is at the heart of everything we do. Why Pathways? ------------- We chose the word Pathways because we know that opportunity rarely comes as a single moment. It is a journey. Sometimes it begins with **a girl staying in school.** Sometimes it begins with **a mentor who says, “You can.”** Sometimes it begins with **a young person finding community in a new country.** Sometimes it begins with **a woman receiving the support she needs to grow her small business.** Our role is to help make those pathways more visible, accessible, and possible. Our work begins with **girls' education**, because we believe every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, dream, and determine the direction of her own life. We extend that work through **youth mentorship and leadership development**, including support for international students and young people navigating new educational and cultural environments. And we are building toward **economic opportunity for women in underserved communities**, recognizing that when women have the opportunity to build sustainable livelihoods, the impact reaches families and communities. Today, Mirembe Pathways works across **Uganda, Ghana,** and the **United States**, with a vision to grow wherever pathways to opportunity are needed. Our story is still being written. --------------------------------- Mirembe began with experiences, conversations, and a shared belief that circumstances should not determine the limits of someone's future. It began with one vision. It grew through a shared vision. And today, it belongs to a growing community of people who believe that **everyone deserves a pathway to possibility.** **Dream. Empower.
